Trinjak

Red grape variety

The red Trinjak, or Trnjak in the local language, comes from southern Dalmatia, southeast of Split on the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina. Curiously, it is not found there; it is only permitted for wine production in the Dalmatian hinterland. The name may come from the municipality of the same name in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Trnjak only produces moderate yields, sprouts rather later and matures rather later. The grapes are medium-sized, the berries are small and quite thick-skinned. Today Trnja is often blended with international varieties such as Merlot. In addition to the Dalmatian hinterland, for example near Mostar, in Primorska Hrvatska or in Makarska, this variety can also be found across the border in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
