The white wine variety Verdiso is a long-established grape variety in the Colli Euganei region south of Padua that experienced its first major heyday at the beginning of the 18th century, when it was planted out en masse after a devastating frost. For much of the 20th century, Verdiso largely disappeared until it was rediscovered in the 1960s. After a small renaissance, however, the vineyard area shrank again, so that today there are still around 100 hectares of vineyards. The late-ripening grape variety is just as suitable for producing sparkling wines such as Frizzante as it is for noble sweet wines. A few hectares are in production in the province of Treviso, where Verdiso is added to Glera to produce Prosecco. There are also a few hectares of vineyards in the Breganze region, where it is processed into the well-known passito-style sweet wine Torcolato under the name Peverenda. Few producers are starting to develop the Verdiso as a pure variety.
