Verduzzo Friulano

White grape variety

The white wine variety Verduzzo Trevigiano is a grape variety common in the province of Treviso and Venti, but is not considered to be quite as high quality as the Verduzzo Friulano, which is mainly planted in Friuli. However, the Verduzzo Trevigiano is not related to the Veruzzo Friulano, but is often confused with it. The name Trevigiano refers to the province of Treviso, although the origin of the variety is obscure. It is suspected that the variety was imported from the island of Sardinia, but Verduzzo Trevigiano is not related to a single grape variety there. The late-ripening variety is vigorous; little is known about diseases of the grapes or the vine. The Verduzzo Trevigiano is suitable for producing dry wines as well as semi-dry or sweet ones. It is only very rarely aged in new, small oak barrels. Even in pure varieties it is rarely found. It is usually blended with Verduzzo Friulano. However, since most producers only label these wines with the word "Verduzzo", this naturally encourages misunderstandings and confusion. It is also used to produce Vino Frizzante in Veneto.
