The largest wagyu beef fair in Japan, Zenkyo, is an important event held every five years since its founding in 1966. This year, the competition will take place from October 6 to 10 in Japan’s Kagoshima prefecture.

According to Wagyu Authentic, each prefecture in Japan will compete in two main categories: breed improvement and meat quality. The latter has various measures including yield and quality of marbling. Miyazaki prefecture, related to Miyazaki Beef, has won this Olympics three consecutive times and been served at the Oscars.

“These last few years, the boom in Japanese food, as well as widespread praise for the high quality of wagyu, have caused overseas demand to grow rapidly,” Toru Takano, an official of the National Federation of Agricultural Co-operative Associations, was quoted as saying by Reuters.

The Japan External Trade Organisation states that to be classified as wagyu (Japanese beef), the following cattle breeds are considered: Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled, Japanese Shorthorn and interbred hybrids of those four breeds. Currently, over 200 branded wagyu are reported to exist nationwide.
