First Bar Solely Dedicated to Women's Sport Opens in the US

The Sports Bra, what's believed to be the first bar dedicated exclusively to women's sport, opened its doors to the public on April 1 in Oregon.

Sports bars often have a reputation for being male-dominated environments but a new bar in Oregon hopes to change this.

Jenny Nguyen, the chef and founder of The Sports Bra raised more than $100,000 on Kickstarter and used the funding and international attention to launch the bar that focuses on “building community and culture around supporting, empowering and promoting girls and women in sports”.

The Sports Bar, which opened its doors on April 1, offers a variety of female sports, from pro golf to college softball. The bar opens from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am-11pm.

Sports Bra has a strong message which it carries over to its suppliers: Nguyen purchases beverages and produces from female-owned companies in the community. Even its beer and cocktails are tribute to women’s sports, with a drink called “Triple Axel”, referring to one of the hardest jumps in figure skating.

The bar menu contains traditional pub dishes with vegan-friendly options including her mother’s baby back ribs and her aunt’s glazed chicken wings. Burgers, nachos and steaks are also available. Sports Bra also allows kids, as its owner believes that exposing them to women’s sports can have a lasting impact on their understanding of equity in sports – and in life.

According to UNESCO, 40% of all sports participants are women but women’s sports receive only around 4% of all sports media coverage.
