Kebab specialist: Where can you get the best kebab in Germany?

With the help of his community, YouTuber and food specialist Holger Schwietering is looking for the best kebab in Germany. As Holle21614, he doesn't mince his words. These three stores are at the top of his ranking.

More than three hundred thousand people follow Holger Schwietering, alias Holle21614, on his mission to find the best kebab in Germany. The YouTuber travels across the country to test the German-Turkish cult snack, which is one of the Germans' favorite foods. The 36-year-old's kebab ranking, which has been compiled over the years and constantly put to the test, carries weight. Restaurateurs report exploding sales figures as soon as Schwietering publishes a positive assessment of the kebab. Holle doesn't mince his words in his tests, which he carries out secretly, among other things. He analyzes the kebabs down to the smallest detail and is refreshingly authentic – sometimes to the chagrin of the store owners. These three stores lead the kebab ranking (as of 09.07.2024):

Sefa Beef Döner

As the name suggests, the beef skewer is the main protagonist here. In contrast to many other skewers, which are industrially produced and overly flavored with countless spices and additives, this is an entrecôte skewer. The meat is specially layered and only lightly seasoned so that the meat flavor is in the foreground. The kebab is traditionally topped with fresh vegetables and subtle sauces. The in-house bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but does not take away from the first-class meat.

Artuklu Grill – Special kebab house

The Artuklu Grill in Gelsenkirchen is rather inconspicuous. At first glance. If you take a closer look, you can guess the special part of the name. Unlike most of the competition, it serves almost exclusively kebabs – and does so with dedication. The meat kebab, which is prepared fresh every day, stands out from other kebabs due to the young veal used, while the meat is marinated in milk overnight, giving it a unique taste. The simple bread, heated under the contact grill, does not detract from the overall experience.

Yaprak Grillhouse

The Yaprak Grillhouse, now in its 3rd generation, is located in the tranquil town of Kornwestheim near Stuttgart. The word yaprak, which translates as leaf, is the traditional name for skewers made up of finely sliced layers of meat. Every day, a skewer weighing around 80 kg is made here, which is then golden brown and sliced wafer-thin between the bread. It goes without saying that the bread is home-baked according to an old family recipe and spread with a unique mixture that enhances the taste of the bread. In addition to the classic yoghurt sauce, there is also a spicy ajvar sauce.
