Malta Becomes the First EU Nation to Require Proof of Vaccination for Visitors
Starting on Wednesday, July 14, Malta requires visitors to present a Covid-19 vaccination certificate recognised by Maltese health authorities.
Covid-19 cases are growing
Malta, with a population of over half a million people, had 46 active cases on July 1 but the number rose to 252 on July 9. The government says 90% of new cases are among unvaccinated people. To stem the latest rise in coronavirus infections, the government has decided to adopt stronger measures.
New rules
Starting on Wednesday, visitors to Malta are required to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate that is issued by Malta, the European Union or the United Kingdom. The country does not recognise those who receive a negative PCR test result.
“Malta will be the first EU country taking this step,” health minister Chris Fearne said. Children aged five to twelve will only need to present proof of a negative PCR test, while those under five are exempt from all documentation requirements.
