SKI AND HIKING AREA SCHWEMMALM ULTEN: INSIDER TIP FOR SNOW PURISTS
Let yourself be enchanted by the Ulten Valley in South Tyrol.
Not far from Merano/Meran, you can discover a Enchanting winter wonderland with dense forests, snow-covered Alpine pastures and ancient shingle-roofed farmhouses. On the horizon loom the Three thousand meter peaks of the Ortler into the sky and in between lies the small, fine Schwemmalm Ulten ski area. Enjoy a active timeout in a breathtaking winter landscape, far away from the hustle and bustle.
The Ultental Valley stands for the original South Tyrol, for 300 days of sunshine a year and for a peaceful winter. The local Schwemmalm Ulten ski area is an insider tip away from the hustle and bustle - all the better in times like these. It is located on the sunny mountain ridge above the village of Kuppelwies, between 1,150 and 2,600 meters above sea level. Visitors appreciate the 25 kilometers of slopes and five kilometers of off-piste runs. Another highlight are the wide, tree-free and sunny slopes below the Mutegg summit, which are among the most beautiful ski runs in South Tyrol. The ski area has won several awards for its excellent slope preparation, snow reliability and small, rustic ski huts. The latter invite you with traditional dishes to refuel on the large sun terraces.
An unforgettable experience off the slopes too
If you don't just want to have fun on the slopes in winter, you can also enjoy numerous other activities on the Schwemmalm. Get out of the warm room and into the white winter splendor with snowshoeing and winter hiking. The tranquillity and beauty of nature along the Ultner Höfeweg trail is perfect for recharging your batteries. The winter hiking trails to the Innere Schemmalm, the Steinrast or the Mariolberger Alm above St. Pankraz offer views as far as the South Tyrolean horizon.
Cross-country skier get going on the cross-country ski trails. Right next to the valley station of the Schwemmalm Ulten ski area, the Ulten panorama trail runs between 12 and 25 kilometers along the lake and the frozen Falschauer, past ancient farms and through snow-covered forests towards the sun. The tobogganers set off from the Breitebenbahn valley station to Steinrast and the starting point of the competition-calibrated natural toboggan run "Moscha". We also recommend night tobogganing, where tobogganers whizz down the mountain every Wednesday from 7 pm. Skaters pirouette on the natural ice rink in Kuppelwies and ski tourers will also find a wide variety of terrain in the 40-kilometer-long Ultental Valley - and absolute snow reliability around the glacier area in the Ortler massif. The ski tour to the 2,658-metre-high Mutegg summit is popular and snow-sure until late spring, with magnificent views of the Ötztal Alps and the Dolomites. By the way: every Thursday evening, the slopes on the Schwemmalm are reserved exclusively for ski tourers from 5.30 to 9.30 pm.
