Supermarket giants offer cut-price Christmas dinners
Analysis shows Aldi provides the cheapest value meal.
While some of us like to spend big at Christmas, the cost of living crisis has forced a festive rethink for many, with the supermarkets battling to outdo each other in terms of which offers the best value festive feast.
A study by credit broker Cashlady.com at eight of the UK’s leading supermarkets analysed the cost of the key ingredients required to create a Christmas dinner, with the result that Aldi provided the cheapest available meal.
Shopping for the likes of a whole turkey, potatoes, carrots, Brussels sprouts, gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce saw the German retail giant offering a meal for less than £3 per person, with Consumer Finance Expert at Cashlady.com, Dan Whittaker, saying: “If you look in the right places, a delicious festive meal can be bought for as little as £24, feeding between 8 and 10 guests – even more cause for celebration!" The full cost at Aldi was £24.43 (around €29), coming in at £2.71 per person.
Second place went to Asda (£25.84), with Tesco claiming third place (£26.33); on the pricier side Marks & Spencer offered a similar meal for £57.84 with Waitrose coming in at £60.58 (around €70).
“As the centrepiece of the day, it will be reassuring to know that this December families can enjoy Christmas Day without having to break your bank in the process,” added Dan.
