Champagne Pierre Péters

Falstaff Online 2022

The Péters family can trace its history in Champagne back to 1840, when Gaspard Péters, a native of Luxembourg, married into the Doué family in Champagne and came into possession of two hectares of vineyards. However, it was not until 1919 that Camille Péters really started growing grapes, and he was one of the first to sell Champagne in Champagne under his own name. In 1946, the first Champagne was launched under the name of Pierre Péters. Today, Rodolphe is the 6th generation to produce Champagne, and at a level that astonishes critics and sends connoisseurs into euphoria. Just 19 hectares of vineyards - all planted with Chardonnay - are now farmed as sustainably as possible with respect for nature. No wonder; most of the parcels are located in the best sites in the Côte des Blancs in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize or Cramant. The family has never relied on clones, as most other producers do, but on a Sélection Massale. This means that the best mother vines are selected directly in the vineyard after strict selection. The grapes are pressed in the cellar extremely carefully and unusually slowly. Rodolphe pays attention to the yields, which do not have to be low at any price, so that the concentration does not drown out the elegance and finesse. The wines are aged in steel tanks, including malolactic fermentation. All Champagnes are consequently marketed as "Blanc de Blancs", except for the rosé, of course. The stock of "Vins de Réserve" is unique, because these date back to the end of the eighties. The showpiece of the house is the "Le Chétillon", a Champagne from the famous and legendary single vineyard of the same name. The house can dispose of three parcels with up to almost 90-year-old vines here. These are vinified separately in steel tanks or wooden barrels and then cuveed to a stunning Champagne.
