Wine was first produced at the Niedermayr winery in Girlan in 1852. Originally buying 100% of grapes, Niedermayr has continuously expanded its own vineyard holdings in recent years. Since 2007, the company has also officially operated as a winery and owns 25 hectares, while ten hectares are leased on a long-term basis. Josef Niedermayr and his wife Erika run the business together; Josef Niedermayr is responsible for the cellar together with Stefan Rohregger, who took over the technical management in 2012 and is shaping the new, modern style of the wines. A few years ago, Niedermayr's cellar was extensively renovated. State-of-the-art technology and concepts were incorporated into the interior of the new cellar, which is located in the historic centre of the wine village of Girlan. They form the basis for high performance and quality. At the beginning of the 1990s, the sweet wine "Aureus" was one of the first of the new generation of South Tyrolean sweet wines and set a trend that is still continuing. With the current vintage, the former cuvée has become a pure Gewürztraminer, which presents itself in outstanding form right from the start. "Riserva" Lagrein from Gries is at its usual high level. The Pinot Blanc "Hof zu Pramol", whose grapes come from a small single vineyard high above Eppan, is also remarkable.
