The Leth family's winery in Fels is located directly on the loess terraces of the Wagram. Probably no other wine-growing region in Austria is so dominated by one terroir as the Wagram. The loess plays a decisive role in shaping the character of the wines, and the Grüner Veltliner is indebted to it with great spiciness, density and harmony. It is therefore no coincidence that more than half of the impressive 58 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to this variety. Five different Grüner Veltliners are pressed from the south-facing terraced vineyards. The two site wines from the Brunnthal and Scheiben vineyards, which are classified as "Erste Lagen" of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich, are outstanding. It is not a striking primary fruit that is at the forefront of these wines, but the complexity of the aromas, fine minerality and excellent potential for long bottle ageing. The fact that the Veltliners from the Leth winery are among the best in the country is impressively demonstrated by first places in both the "Falstaff Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix" and the "SALON Österreich Wein".
In addition to Grüner Veltliner, the winery also focuses on the traditional Wagram variety Roter Veltliner. With an extremely successful combination of fruitiness and juiciness, it demonstrates the high quality potential of this increasingly popular specialty, which is vinified in three varieties at the Leth winery.
It is thanks to the commitment of Franz Leth Jr. that experience was gained with organic cultivation more than a decade ago and that the entire estate will be certified organic from the 2021 harvest. Franz Leth Jr. is also uncompromising in all other quality matters: despite the large vineyard area, the harvest is carried out 100% by hand, the recently built new press house has been set up according to the principles of maximum gentle processing, and the estate's top site wines are stored in large traditional wooden barrels for at least a year. The new sparkling wine range, which is currently being developed, is also limited to the two highest quality levels "Sekt Austria Reserve" and "Sekt Austria Große Reserve".
