The white wine Pyramid Valley Field of Fire Chardonnay, vintage 2020 from the winery Pyramid Valley Vineyards has been rated in 2022 by Anne Krebiehl MW with 95 Falstaff points. It is a wine made from the grape variety Chardonnay from the region North Canterbury in New Zealand.
Reduction in the form of a smoky flintiness is the first impression. Underneath that is a sense of lemon and yellow stone fruit. On the palate it is texture that strikes first, a phenolic richness that almost coats the mouth and counters and buffers the brisk, vivid freshness that pervades everything. The reductive smoky notes are still there but instead of stone fruit, it is ripe, bold lemon that fills the mouth. This is layered and complex and texturally outstanding with a long, mouth-watering, chalky finish.
