Barr at Noma as Noma Heads West
This spring, Copenhagen’s culinary axis briefly stretches across the Atlantic. As noma prepares for a residency in Los Angeles, its long-time counterpart Barr will step into noma’s kitchens and dining rooms at home, taking over the space from March 5 to 30.
The exchange reflects a shared history rather than a simple change of address. Barr emerged from Noma’s original harbour-side home and has since established itself as one of Copenhagen’s modern classics, grounded in the flavours of the Nordic and Baltic regions. While Noma turns its attention westward—once again immersing itself in a new landscape and cultural context—Barr returns to familiar ground, transforming Noma’s dining room into the setting for a distinctly communal experience.
Takeover in March
During the takeover, Barr will present a five-course menu served family style, with accompanying beverages included. The cooking centres on the restaurant’s signature approach: modern interpretations of favourite classics, guided by seasonal ingredients and designed to be shared. The atmosphere is deliberately informal, built around a long communal table crafted from Dinesen Douglas fir, encouraging a sense of gathering rather than ceremony.
The timing also coincides with a moment of transition for Barr itself. As its harbour-side restaurant on Strandgade undergoes a full refurbishment, the temporary move into Noma’s space feels like a natural homecoming—one that underscores the close ties between the two teams, even as their paths momentarily diverge.
Dinner is served Thursday through Monday throughout the residency, with the full experience—five courses and beverage pairing—priced at DKK 1,200 per person. For a few weeks in March, diners in Copenhagen are offered a rare alignment: one restaurant looking outward, the other inward, both connected by a shared culinary lineage.
