Long Weekend: Linz - Metamorphoses of a City

Travelguide

Linz changes incessantly, time and again the Upper Austrian capital reinvents itself. Sometimes it shows itself innovative, sometimes historical, sometimes it has to cope with the past, sometimes it is far ahead of many other cities. But it is never boring.

Linz changes - with its slogan, the provincial capital expresses the fascination it exerts on its guests - the fascination of one of the most successful cities in contemporary Austria. The guideline for the program of the European Capital of Culture Year 2009 became the philosophy of a city with many different messages: culture, economy, quality of life, nature and industry are the parameters of this development.

But let's start a little earlier. The name of the capital of Upper Austria goes back to a Celtic word that has been handed down in the Latin form Lentia and became Linz through the German phonetic shift. The city's most important modernist museum, the Lentos Kunstmuseum, reflects this origin in its name.

If you go back a little in history, you will also find an interesting culinary document, which can be used to show how progressive and culturally aware the city was even back then. In 1804, the publishing house of the imperial-royal privileged academic art, music and bookstore in Linz published the "New, Large, Tested and Proven Linz Cookbook" by Maria Elisabetha Meixner, at that time cook in the monastery house in Kremsmünster. In the preface it says: "The awareness of having recently become useful to her esteemed fellow citizens and friends of art will grant her the greatest pleasure ...".

No one will deny that cooking is an art. Nevertheless, today the author of a cookbook would hardly address her readers as "art lovers," Meixner did, and so her "Linz Cookbook" was successfully offered alongside Schubert songs and copperplate engravings. The book was in such demand that 24 editions were published by 1894.

And the recipes still make entertaining reading - from Turkish soup to boeuf à la mode, from English roast to exotic turtles in lime sauce and violet juice. The Linzer Torte, which was already widely known at that time, was presented in four types, as "stirred Linzer Torte, Linzer Torte of another kind, Linzer Torte with cinnamon and Linzer Torte as it is usually prepared by the Linzer housewife".

The historical Linz cuisine is not a purely Upper Austrian cuisine, but is characterized by diverse influences: especially from Bohemia, Bavaria, Swabia, Hungary, but also from France, England and Spain. And so it has remained.

Linz's gastronomy is a beautiful mix of traditional inns, trendy cafés and contemporary fusion cuisines that set special accents. This gastronomic diversity is part of the cultural experience of the city, which is characterized by curiosity and experimentation, not only in the culinary field.

Long Weekend: What you must experience in three days in the city.

Friday
After a visit to the Ars Electronica Center, home cooking is delicious at the "Alte Metzgerei". In search of the ultimate Linzer Torte, for example, you'll find the perfect cake at the "k. & k. Hofbäckerei" or at "Jindrak". Cult in the evening: drinks and more at "Fräulein Florentine".

Saturday
Stroll through the Südbahnhofmarkt, Linz's land of plenty. Then to the "Yellow Crocodile" for refreshments before the high culture: the Lentos Art Museum, including a drink on the terrace. In the evening, you're spoiled for choice when dining at the "Promenadenhof" - from tapas to Tafelspitz.

Sunday
Breakfast with tradition in the arty "Traxlmayr" on the promenade, relax during a walk along the Danube, and then drink tea at "Madame Wu". Hotspot in the evening: "Gelbes Krokodil".

Excursion tip: Pöstlingberg

The local mountain of Linz is the ideal destination for an excursion. Top view of the city. The historic Pöstlingbergbahn invites you for a ride. It is possible to visit the pilgrimage basilica, and for children the hit: the grotto railroad and the Linz zoo.
