The red wine variety Feteasc? Neagr?, which means "black young girl," is not a color mutation of Feteasc? Alba, but related to this one. The country of origin, Moldova, also links the two varieties. It is also assumed that it is a very old and traditional variety. The Feteasc? Negr? is very resistant to extremes, i.e. against heat and drought stress as well as against winter cold and spring frosts. Equipped with thick-skinned berries in compact clusters, it also defies most rot diseases, such as powdery mildew. This grape variety declined sharply in Moldova under Russian rule, but is now increasingly being recultivated by some producers. In Romania, this variety has a yield of over 1,000 hectares and produces some of the best red wines in the country, primarily from Moldova and Muntania. The wines are usually produced in a dry style, but there are also semi-dry and sweet versions. There are around 1,600 hectares of vineyards in Ukraine, but it cannot be estimated to what extent both varieties of Feteasc?, white and red, were combined in this information. Other areas of Feteasc? Negr? are not known.
This grape variety is also known by the name of:
