Diageo Breaks Ground on its First Malt Whisky Distillery in China

The distillery in Eryuan County in Yunnan will produce the group’s first China-origin, single malt whisky. “China is the world’s largest beverage alcohol market and the demand for whisky is growing rapidly among middle-class consumers who are keen to further discover and enjoy fine whiskies”, said Sam Fischer, Diageo‘s president for Asia Pacific and global travel. UK-based Diageo, whose brands include Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness, is one of the largest spirits producers in the world.
Whisky visitor centre
At more than 2,100 metres above sea level, the site for the 66,000 sqm distillery was selected for its temperate climate, rich biodiversity, and access to natural spring water, he said, adding that it would also feature an interactive visitor centre. Renewable and clean technologies will be used in the distillery to ensure it is carbon neutral, recycles all its water and is zero-waste, Diageo said.
