What to know about Glide, London’s newest ice rink

UK

With the iconic Battersea Power Station having recently reopened after extensive renovations, London’s only riverside ice rink just outside is one of this year’s best.

The brand-new rink was created by the same team as London’s famous Winter Wonderland and the Natural History Museum rink, which ran until last year. Glide features three interlinked ice rinks, with a giant Christmas tree at the centre and surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. Visitors can enjoy a rink-side drinks bar and fairground rides, plus entertainment such as live music, DJ sets, bingo games and pub quiz each week.

The ice rink opened on November 10 and will run seven days a week throughout the Christmas period until January 8. Adult tickets start from £12 for one session, which is 50 minutes, while child tickets are £8. There are also alternative ticket options such as the Family Ticket, valid for two adults and two children or one adult and three children, which costs £36. Student tickets and Adult & Toddler tickets are £11.50, the latter of which is for one adult and one child under the age of four. Both include skate hire and a free hot or soft drink.

For somewhere cosy to spend time for large groups planning to visit the rink, private igloos can be booked for £15 per person for groups of eight. The igloos have comfortable seating with views and include a complimentary drink per person, such as wine, beer or a soft drink, however, ice-skating tickets must be purchased in addition to igloos. Additional drinks can be bought from The Glass House bar. Tickets are available for the rink’s second theme music night, which will be a Taylor Swift session on December 5.

Glide is located directly in front of Battersea Power Station, which is a short walk from the recently opened tube stop of the same name. The newly renovated power station reopened on October 14, over 40 years after shutting down. It has been transformed into a hub of shopping, leisure and entertainment venues, including some of the biggest high street names in the famous turbine halls, such as Calvin Klein, Le Labo and Superdry. There is also Curated Makers, which features products from more than 40 local artists and creators. A number of new food outlets have also been added to the complex, such as vegan favourite Megan’s and seafood restaurant The Wright Brothers.

Two of the most recent attractions to have opened in Battersea Power Station include The Control Room, which is the site of the original Control Room B, which has been transformed into a cocktail bar and event space. The recently launched Lift 109 is a circular glass lift which takes visitors to the top of the station’s northwest chimney. Guests will learn about the history and heritage of the building before being taken 109m into the air to enjoy sweeping 360° views across the Thames and central London.
