After numerous variations ranging from sweet to savory, the classic snack is getting an ice-cold makeover. But how does frozen popcorn match up to the conventional version?

For many, grabbing  popcorn when going to the movies is at least as important as the actual movie – and indeed, the popular snack remains as indispensible as ever, a staple of parties and cozy nights in. However, popcorn has evolved far beyond its traditional, salty, butter-flavored form these days, with myriad variations available.

An increasing number of sweet varieties are currently enjoying great popularity: from caramel and chocolate to marshmallow and fruit flavors such as strawberry or watermelon – there are no limits to the imagination. And as the ongoing frozen popcorn trend shows, it needn't even be hot. In fact, the ice-cold variant is proof positive that popcorn can be reinvented again and again without losing its nostalgic charm.

More crunch and flavor?

But does freezing popcorn actually work? While room-temperature popcorn is well-known, it tends to divide critics: Some avoid its chewy texture, while others claim it's actually superior in flavor. Certain voices on the Internet claim that frozen popcorn goes even further, with more intensity and a more pleasant consistency. While this may sound unlikely compared to a fresh batch, Falstaff's own experiment showed that frozen popcorn is indeed  crunchier. The reason is simple: popcorn has a softer, fluffier texture when fresh as it still contains moisture. This moisture crystallizes during freezing, however, providing a heftier crunch later on. Another advantage: fewer pieces get stuck in your teeth, making the experience more enjoyable. It would appear then that freezing not only improves texture, but also enhances taste and mouthfeel.

However, the differences end with texture – frozen popcorn tastes no better or worse than the classic version, as the freezing process has no noticeable effect on flavor. This also means, however, that frozen popcorn can be seasoned to your heart's content with any spices or sweet ingredients you desire – and even kept in the freezer, waiting for your next movie night.
