Munich Airport introduces new routes for summer 2023

From European getaways like Bordeaux and Asturias, to far-flung destinations such as Japan and Mexico, this summer will see several new flight routes launch for the first time out of Munich International.

For Munich Airport, the high season for tourism will kick off from the beginning of April. In anticipation of this, a variety of airlines have announced they will be introducing new routes out of the south German city. One of the biggest flight operators not only in Germany but in Europe and beyond, is Lufthansa who will be adding cities including Osaka, Mexico City and Shanghai to their flight schedules.

After recently reopening to tourists after over three years of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, China has finally reopened, leading many airlines to reinstate routes, including Shanghai which is also set to be added to Lufthansa’s programme later this year. The reopening has been welcome news reciprocally, with Air China announcing brand new flights to both Shanghai and Beijing from Munich beginning this summer, while close neighbour Japan will increase connectivity both through Lufthansa’s existing flights and All Nippon Airways (ANA) adding three flights per week to Tokyo.

More European destinations

For travellers looking to explore closer to home, more and more European destinations are accessible by air. Having been temporarily paused, flights to Bordeaux in France and Rzeszow in Poland will be resuming, alongside new Lufthansa flights to the Asturian capital Oviedo. Other new destinations operating from Munich include Chisinau operated by Fly One, Naples with EasyJet, and the popular Croatian island of Brac via Croatia Airlines. Before this, the latest operator to launch flights was Greek airline SKY which began flights between Munich and Athens in October 2022 in anticipation of the winter holiday period.

Munich Airport is hoping to reach pre-pandemic passenger numbers now that restrictions have mostly been lifted around the world. In 2022, the summer season between April and October saw over 30 million travellers pass through– around 75% of pre-2019 figures. The airport is one of Germany’s largest travel hubs and the second-busiest airport in the country after Frankfurt, offering thousands of flights to destinations within Europe, such as Italy, France, Spain and Croatia; and worldwide, including Egypt, North America, Hong Kong and Thailand.
