The Michelin-starred restaurant Anthony's Kitchen in Meerbusch is insolvent. This was announced by the provisionally appointed insolvency administrator via a communications agency on Tuesday.

Michelin-starred chef Anthony Sarpong has filed for insolvency for his restaurant Anthony's Kitchen in Meerbusch. The financial imbalance was caused by an overload of other projects: "I got bogged down in the expansion of my activities," regrets Sarpong. "I lost sight of my own restaurant Anthony's Kitchen a little due to the many engagements."

Despite the insolvency, the restaurant will continue to operate as usual. The booked table reservations also remain valid. The company's twelve employees were informed about the insolvency application and the next steps. The employees' wages and salaries are secured for the time being by the insolvency substitute benefits.

Two sides of the coin

Michelin star awards are not only a blessing for many top restaurants, they can also have their disadvantages. Anthony's Kitchen was also faced with a number of challenges: Constantly rising costs for fresh, high-quality food, spices and flavorings, coupled with high expenditure on energy and staff. In addition, investments are made in a stylish interior and exclusive ambience. Despite high menu prices, these costs are difficult for many Michelin-starred restaurants to bear.

Gastronomic balancing act

To cushion rising operating costs, many top chefs like Anthony Sarpong rely on additional sources of income such as cookery courses, catering, events and online stores. The restaurateur himself was also involved in two other restaurants, which ultimately cost him the time to concentrate on his main project Anthony's Kitchen. The attempt to minimize the economic risk through various activities failed and so he had to file for insolvency for Anthony's GmbH.

Despite the current situation, Sarpong is optimistic about the future. With a clear focus on Anthony's Kitchen, he hopes to be able to fully exploit his creative vision again and enrich the gastronomy scene with new, innovative concepts: "My aim now is to focus fully on my own restaurant Anthony's Kitchen in the future. For me, cooking is more than just a profession. I want to redefine gastronomy and set new culinary accents that offer my guests a unique experience that surprises and delights them time and time again."
