Experiencing the entire winemaking journey up close: At the vinery “Freigut Thallern” in Gumpoldskirchen, Lower Austria, guests are invited to explore this tradition-rich estate on four different dates throughout the year. Each event includes expert-led talks, meals, guided tastings, and special discounts at the local wine shop.
The winery Freigut Thallern in Gumpoldskirchen is not only one of Austria’s oldest wine estates, it’s also a place where tradition and craftsmanship are lived every day. Starting 2026, the historic estate will open its doors to wine enthusiasts with its new “Vintner for 1 Year” program, inviting them to take part in the entire winemaking process—from grapevine to finished product—on four different dates distributed over the year.
Across immersive sessions throughout the year, participants witness the different stages of winemaking—from grapevine pruning in winter to harvesting and cellar work in autumn—under qualified supervision. Each session blends hands-on practice in the vineyard and wine cellar with culinary moments and tastings.
With our 'Vintner for 1 Year' program, we want to bring people together who not only enjoy wine, but also want to understand it—a first step towards our Friends of Freigut Thallern community.

The number of participants is limited to twenty to ensure an intimate, hands-on experience for every guest vintner. “For the younger generation of wine enthusiasts in particular, taking an active role in the production process offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes perspective—and a deeper appreciation of what it truly means to grow and work with grapes,” says Graner.
The program is also available as a gift voucher, making it an ideal Christmas present or corporate incentive. The fee of 590 euro per person includes not only an immersive look into winemaking throughout one year, but also six wines produced from the grapes harvested together, all lectures, meals, a pair of vineyard shears, and special discounts at the local wine shop: 20 percent off all Thallern wines and 10 percent off the rest of the assortment for the entire year.
