Saxony-Anhalt

With 768 hectares, Saale-Unstrut is the largest of the five smaller German wine-growing regions. Although located particularly far north, the vineyards, some of which are picturesquely terraced, find ideal conditions here in the mineral shell limestone soils around Freyburg and Bad Kösen. Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc and Riesling are the most typical regional products. Equally characteristic is the dry style of vinification for which the wines of the Saale and Unstrut are known. The northernmost vines classified for German quality wine grow in Höhnstedt on the Süßen See.
