Great Southern

Australia

Great Southern is a sub-region of the Western Australia wine region. The Great Southern region stretches 200 kilometers from east to west and 100 kilometers from north to south, making it look like a rectangle. Great Southern is technically the largest wine region in Australia. It is divided into five sub-areas: Porongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Denmark and Frankland River. Vineyards throughout the region produce high quality grapes. Due to the size of the wine region, different soils and climatic conditions prevail. However, Great Southern is one of the coolest wine growing regions in Western Australia. The pleasant maritime climate and measured rainfall are particularly suitable for the grape varieties Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
