Kreta

For a long time viticulture in Crete was dominated by half a dozen winegrowers' cooperatives. Vignerons were encouraged to produce extremely high yields with little regard for quality. Harvests of 420 hl/ha or more were not uncommon. However, following an ever increasing influx of tourists and financial investment, quality wines are produced in this, the most southerly European wine-growing region. The climate is hot and dry and is mitigated only by the on shore breezes. New plantings at higher, cooler altitudes and a greater understanding of the dynamic topography of this mountainous island, means that Crete is now one of the regions at the forefront of modern Greek winemaking. Delicate whites are made from Vilana; full, rich reds from Kotsifali and the red grape, Liatiko, makes both dry and aged sweet wines, the latter being made from sun-dried grapes.
