There are plenty of inns of this type in beautiful South Tyrol. You drive a few minutes up from the valley and soon find yourself in the middle of lush meadows with happy cattle, have the most magnificent view of the mountains and are served touchingly good food. Exactly one of these culinary gems - rather rare in Austria - is situated in a quiet location 800 meters above Bischofshofen. The Ratgeb family runs their small inn, built in 1958, with remarkable attention to detail. If you come here at game time, for example, you can enjoy excellent venison tartare for a friendly
25 euros with sturgeon caviar from Grüll - the restaurant's own "BürglHöh" label gives a hint of the indulgence of its regular clientele. In general, the kitchen interprets the theme of game in a way that is rarely found in this variety. Roast venison from the wood-fired oven, venison wieners or a very finely seasoned venison lasagne with chanterelles and mountain cheese. For reasons of capacity, venison brawn or venison goulash could only be enjoyed at the next table, accompanied by enthusiastic noises. Away from wild animals, the Leitgebs also run a pond with salmon trout and char at an altitude of 1278 meters, which is flushed with Hochkönig mountain water. Afterwards, the question remains - elderberry cookery or the delightful iced spruce cone with spruce wipferl mousse and rowan berries. The fact that you are a guest of wine freaks is quickly apparent from the list of bottles. Alongside fine everyday wines such as "Unendlich", "Perwolff", "Batonnage" and "Masseto". Also there: mature magnums from Knoll at urban single-bottle prices. So very important: rooms are also available.
