The magnificent Ansitz Mairhof is a real "garage winery": it currently comprises around 4,000 square meters of vineyards, enough space to grow the Vernatsch, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Grüner Veltliner grape varieties, with Pinot Noir and Grüner Veltliner having only recently been planted. "As you can see from the area under cultivation, we are a very small business, but we would like to expand a little in the next few years," admits Matthias Bernhart. Four years ago, the wine cellar was rebuilt and the oldest part of the 800-year-old house was converted into a very attractive tasting room.
The choice of varieties is traditional with Vernatsch and Pinot Noir, but also focuses on modernity and variety, as Grüner Veltliner in particular tends not to be found in the area. "Our vineyards have good exposure to the sun and are very airy, which saves a lot of plant protection treatments, which in turn benefits the wines! The wines themselves are fruity and characterised by their minerality, and the sugar-acid ratio is also, in my opinion, good."
