Take the following ingredients: 1) old, up to 90-year-old Riesling vines, 2) a steep slope with a 75 percent gradient, 3) certified organic cultivation, 4) a wine-loving family with three generations of winegrowers behind them, 5) spontaneous fermentation in barrels. What comes out of it? You guessed it: great wines. It is remarkable how restrained such greatness comes across at Franz-Joseph Eifel - without any fuss, as with the juicy dry Kabinett, the "Goldstückchen" late harvest vibrating with mineral energy or the multi-layered off-dry Auslese.
