Abroad, wine from the Moselle is probably the best-known German wine - in the area statistics for Germany, however, the region is only in fifth place. 60 percent of the 8,800 hectares are planted with Riesling. The noble white wine grape grows almost everywhere where a steep slope rises on slate soil. Only in the peripheral areas do other varieties grow, such as Müller-Thurgau. But the true Mosel wine is none other than a Riesling.
From this, the winegrowers press spicy, dry wines, Kabinett and Spätlese wines of great interplay, Auslese wines, which range in style from filigree and fine-nerved to profound opulence.
Last but not least, the monumental Beerenauslesen, Trockenbeerenauslesen and Eisweine are a specialty of the Moselle and its two tributaries Saar and Ruwer: at wine auctions enthusiasts all over the world bid on the best of these rarities - and often pay four-figure, sometimes even five-figure prices.
