Señorio de San Vicente

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

There are few families in Spain that have done as much for the development and reputation of Spanish viticulture as the Eguren family. They have been active in viticulture since 1870 and have developed extremely renowned wineries in various regions. Its headquarters, as well as its main focus, are in the traditional Rioja region. And there, since 1991, it has produced a wine that is among the best and most award-winning wines in Rioja with the "Senoro de San Vicente" winery, named after a remarkable vineyard in Senoro de Sonsierra on the border with Sierra Cantabria, which also gave the winery its name. The headline could be "One vineyard, one variety, one winery, one wine". This is because the Senoro de San Vicente vineyard with its fantastic single vineyard called "La Canoca" not only has an outstanding terroir and a fantastic mesoclimate for producing great Rioja wines, but also a very rare clone of this variety, the "Tempranillo Peludo", which produces outstanding results, but with its low yields does not really fit into a landscape where the focus is always on quantity rather than quality. The Eguren family has dedicated itself heart and soul to this variety of Tempranillo and produces a single, all the more remarkable wine from it. This special Tempranillo, whose vines in the vineyard are almost 70 years old, also requires special methods of ageing. Fermentation takes 10 to 15 days in the historic winery building in San Vicente de Sonsierra and the maceration time alone is another 20 to 40 days. The wine is allowed to mature in barriques made from American and French oak. The result is a Rioja that is hard to beat in terms of authenticity and originality. It playfully combines concentration and power with elegance and finesse despite its considerable volume. And even when mature, it still has considerable ageing potential. It is hardly surprising that Rioja fans celebrate it as one of the best wines of the region.
