Founded as recently as 1957, the history of Bodegas Sierra Cantabria still appears quite youthful, but the founders of the bodega, the Eguren family, can look back on a history that goes back to the time of the emerging heyday of the Rioja region. The family founded their first bodega back in 1870. Today they have 6 different and outstanding bodegas in Rioja and also in Toro, but Sierra Cantabria is considered by experts and connoisseurs to be one of the very best wineries in Rioja and also in the whole of Spain. Marcos Eguren, now the 5th generation oenologist at the bodega, was named "Best Winemaker of the Year" by the renowned wine magazine Wine Enhusiast in 2012 and the bodega itself was named "Winery of the Year" in 2004. Bodega Sierra Cantabria is located in San Vincente de la Sonsierra, surrounded by its own vineyards. However, some parcels are also located in the neighbouring Rioja Alevesa sub-region. All parcels are planted predominantly with Rioja's flagship variety, Tempranllo, but a little Garnacha is also added to the final cuvée wherever necessary. The age of the vines ranges from a youthful 35 years to a robust 100 years. The bodega itself also has a spectacular character. It was built into a rock, with the building itself being constructed from the stones hewn out of the rock. Markos Eguren does not compromise with fast-moving fashions; the winemaking is carried out using traditional methods, with the emphasis on the terroir. Trade magazines and wine experts attest that wines such as "Amancio", "Finca des Bosque" and "El Puntido" are among the very best wines in the region, and this is also reflected in the high ratings in the relevant trade magazines.
