The Eguren family has left its mark on the history of Rioja, it was and is one of the driving forces behind quality development in the region. The family has been growing wine in this famous region since 1870, founded leading bodegas such as Sierra Cantabria and Bodega San Vincente, and acquired another gem in 1998 with Vinedos de Paganos in picturesque Cantabria. There was not much rebuilding to do, the 16th century estate has the traditional wine cellars carved into the rock, in which the wine is stored and matures perfectly. The parcels are situated at an altitude of over 900 meters in cool, airy heights, basically a spot in Rioja Alevesa where only great visionaries and absolute quality fanatics "stray". Marco Eguren, the oenologist, has decided to work differently here than many other producers in the region. He has replaced the traditional ageing of the wines in American oak with French barriques, which gives the wines a completely different, very unique structure. They appear fresher and livelier and also develop greater depth. Eguren's "El Puntido" has long been considered a classic of the region among Rioja lovers, with demand in Spain alone devouring a large part of the harvest. The top wine "La Nieta", a single-varietal Tempranillo from a small plot, which can therefore only be produced in tiny quantities, is considered by critics to be one of the very best red wines in the country and achieves ratings that many a hyped Bordeaux would envy. Will the Eguren family be able to put something on it again?
