Italy Braces for Major Airport Strikes in July
Travellers heading to or through Italy this July should prepare for possible flight disruptions.
A nationwide aviation strike on 5 July and further industrial action at Milan Malpensa Airport later in the month are expected to affect thousands of passengers.
Nationwide Strike to Hit Airports Across Italy
Italy is set to experience significant disruption on 5 July, when a nationwide aviation strike is expected to impact ground handling, air traffic control, airport security and airline operations. Major airports, including Rome Fiumicino, Rome Ciampino and Milan Malpensa, are likely to face delays and flight cancellations as workers across the sector take industrial action.
Milan Malpensa Faces Additional Walkout
Travellers using Milan Malpensa Airport should also be aware of further strike action scheduled for 21 July, which could lead to additional operational disruptions. While the exact impact will depend on staff participation, passengers are advised to expect longer waiting times and possible schedule changes.
Protected Flights Still Planned
Despite the strikes, Italian law requires airlines to operate a number of protected flights during guaranteed service windows, generally between 7:00–10:00 a.m. and 6:00–9:00 p.m. Travellers should check their flight status regularly, monitor updates from their airline and the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), and allow extra time at the airport, as strike schedules may change at short notice.
