Madrid: Cooking-Festival Chefs on Fire
Madrid to host the first edition for portuguese campfire-cooking festival Chefs on Fire on October 5 and 6.
Chefs on Fire, the festival that takes lauded chefs out of their kitchens and into the great outdoors where they cook with nothing more than fire, embers and smoke, is coming to Madrid for the first time on October 5th and 6th with a line-up of famous names, both Spanish and international.
Back home in Portugal, Chefs on Fire just wrapped its sixth season in Estoril’s Fiartil Park where Michelin-starred restaurateurs fired up a feast under impossibly tall plane trees while bands played live sets to an audience perched on hay bales. This is no regular cookout, it’s an intimate yet theatrical fiesta for all the senses – cloaked in BBQ aromas, lit by fairy lights, dotted with bars, decked out with boho-chic furniture and wood-lined campfires sizzling with camaraderie and creative cooking. Its founder, Gonçalo Castel-Branco, and his team have crafted a unique, eco-minded concept that allows guests to get acquainted with top-notch chefs around the fire pit. There are zero white tablecloths and there’s no culinary-snobbism, just good vibes and well-crafted chow – with meat-, fish- and seafood-, vegetarian, and dessert options. Castel-Branco calls it a »party among friends«; in reality, it’s several parties, spread across the main Cascais event and pop-ups around Portugal. Last year, it gathered 20,000 guests, 80 chefs and 20 bands.
The first Madrid edition, staged in the Alfonso XIII Royal Botanical Garden, will feature renowned chefs such as Janaína Torres, crowned The World’s Best Female Chef 2024 by The World's 50 Best Restaurants; Tekuna Gachechiladze, known as the Queen of Modern Georgian Cuisine; and Pablo Rivero and Guido Tassi, from Parrilla Don Julio in Buenos Aires, recognized as the world’s best steakhouse. Also present will be Thomas Troisgros, from Olympe in Rio de Janeiro, Massimiliano Delle Vedove, from two Michelin-starred Smoked Room in Madrid, and Rodolfo Guzmán, from Boragó in Chile, as well as Portuguese chefs Henrique Sá Pessoa (Alma, Lisbon, 2 Michelin stars), Vasco Coelho Santos, João Rodrigues, and Carlos Fernandes.
The list of participating Spanish talent is equally impressive: Lucía Freitas (A Tafona, Santiago de Compostela, 2 Repsol Suns and 1 Michelin Star), Javi Estévez (La Tasquería, Madrid, 1 Repsol Sun and 1 Michelin Star), Carlos Casillas (Barro and Ávila, with 1 Repsol Sun, 1 Michelin Star and 1 Michelin Star and a Green Michelin Star, respectively), Miguel Carretero (Santerra, Madrid, 1 Sol Repsol Sun and 1 Michelin Star), Iñigo Urrechu, Juan D'Onofrio, Roberto Foronda, Alejandro Serrano, David Gil, Rafa Panatieri and Jorge Sastre (Sartoria Panatieri, among the 10 best pizzerias in the world).
In addition to formidable charred, seared, smoky food, Chefs on Fire will feature a wide-ranging musical program. Performers include Coni Lechner Dúo, Pedro Ricardo Trío, Pájaro Sunrise, Nola Brass Band, DJ Guacamayo Tropical, and La Perra Blanco on Saturday October 5, and Andrea Buenavista, Caballo Prieto Azabache, Jazzin' Club, and Queralt Lahoz on Sunday October 6. Also on the menu: learning activities touching upon culture, gastronomy, music, food, sustainability, and innovation, as well as children’s workshops on food and sustainability, focused on cognitive development.
Chefs on Fire will run from noon to midnight. Tickets are on sale now, starting at 50 euro, which includes food and drink and access to the festival grounds and the music venue.
