Stephen Colbert reveals his favorite pizza in NYC
In a recent Q&A of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the program’s eponymous host revealed his favorite pizza spot in New York City.
The host of CBS’s 'Late Show' since 2015, Stephen Colbert has strong opinions on pizza like most New Yorkers. While fielding a few audience questions before taping another episode, the comedian recently divulged what he believes to be the best pizza in the city.
His choice was none other than Lazzara’s Pizza Café in Midtown Manhattan, which he loves so much that a whole pie is his preferred comfort food on a bad day. Colbert’s favorite is the one with prosciutto and red onion, with Lazzara’s signature thin crust.
"And if it's been a rough day or a rough week, my assistant will order me one, and she knows to put it on my desk and not talk to me till I've eaten the whole thing. Because I don't want to share because every slice is just, it is just tangy and sweet..."
Yes to a Sicilian-style Slice
Founded in 1985 by Sebastian and Tony Lazzara, the popular spot on West 38th St. is known for its take on Sicilian-style pizza: typically rectangular with a thick and chewy, yet airy, crust, Lazzara’s serve thin, rectangular slices with no rolled crust, topped with vast amounts of melted mozzarella. Counting regulars from the nearby fashion houses Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and Vera Wang, Lazzara’s cozy, old-fashioned dining room seats about 70 people and is a prime destination for anyone in the Garment District seeking a quick slice.
Colbert also had a tip for the traditionalists, pointing to Sacco Pizza on Ninth Avenue as a reliable source for a New York-style slice. Having perfected the art of the round, thin, and chewy crust, Sacco is definitely worth a try.
