Top 5 bakeries in Malmö
Malmö may be small, but it’s a vibrant hub for exceptional baked goods. This buzzing city in southern Sweden draws inspiration from the baking traditions of Sweden, France, Italy, Argentina, Portugal, Hungary, and beyond, making it a true paradise for bread and pastry lovers.
With its jam-packed energy, diversity, and entrepreneurship, Malmö offers bread and pastries for every preference and palate. From beloved French and Italian classics to Hungarian, Portuguese, and Persian treats you may have never even heard of, the city has it all. The list of hidden gems in Malmö is as warm as a freshly baked loaf, but below you’ll find a carefully curated selection of spots we believe are especially worth a visit on your next stop in this city where tradition meets contemporary flair.
Farina – Where France and Italy come together
Where the beauty of French and Italian baking culture come together as one. At Farina, also the Italian name for flour, you will find both Italian classics as well as French ones such as saccottino, pangoccioli, brioche and of course croissants amongst a bunch of other pastries and bread to be enjoyed either on site or to bring with you on the go. Just note that this place is tiny, but even cozier because of it if you ask us!
During lunch however it’s all about the Pizza Bianca, a street food staple in Rome but a rarity in Malmö outside the walls of Farina. And the thing is, it feels just like sitting on a side-street in Italy while enjoying your Pizza Bianca on their tiny outdoor seating on a warm summer day. From time to time, the Italian cream-filled pastry Maritozzo also shows its beautiful face at Farina. A sweet and delicious must have once to enjoy before it disappears from the menu once again, preferably a few of them.

Ruths – The all-day eatery
What used to house the much beloved restaurant Bastard, in 2021 the name was changed to Ruths (named after the child of co-owner and chef Andreas Dahlberg) and turned into an all-day eatery. And with an all-day eatery, baked goods are of course a definitive must-have outside their other breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings. We’re happy to report that such baked goods at Ruths do not disappoint! In fact, it’s some of the best artisan made bread and pastry you will find in the city. Period.
Enjoy a delightfully soft scone with a light crunchy exterior, perfected croissant, buttery Argentinian medialuna, filled and creamy choux bun or a beautiful seasonal danish – all together with a cup of coffee, tea, lemonade or even wine if you like. Oh, and if you’re particularly on the sweet side of things, don’t miss out on their absolute banger of a semifreddo from their menu.
Besides buying bread and pastry, Ruths also has a small shop where you can get high quality vegetables and ingredients for your own food explorations at home.

Bagaren och Bonden – Dedication to the craft
At Bagaren och Bonden (the baker and the farmer), located on a calm side street of Värnhem, it’s all about artisan made organic bread and pastry based on ingredients of the highest quality, and preferably as local as possible. Especially bread made on sourdough is the guiding star and pride at the tiny bakery where the most of its square meters is reserved solely for baking. An activity which keeps going on and on during your visit. A good sign of both their focus, popularity and priority – something which ends up at tasteful baked goods at Bagaren och Bonden.
Even though all of their sourdough bread, cinnamon and cardamom buns and other edible products are worth a visit itself, whatever you do, do not miss out on their almond croissants offered on the weekends loaded with almond cream, vanilla rhum and roasted almond flakes. Just make sure you are not planning any other dining experience after, since these pastries are quite the hearty ones!

Leve – With entirely plant based pastries
Opening at and closing at 18 (except for Saturdays, which of the opening hours is from 9-16) might sound like a strange approach to running a bakery today. But that’s exactly the intention and point with Leve, to shake up the concept of what a bakery is and can offer. Instead of offering bread primarily for the breakfast hours, the idea is instead to have it freshly made and ready for you when going home instead. A noble contribution to the locals, that is more than well appreciated and has made them stand out on the bakery scene of Malmö.
It doesn’t end just there, though. Leve takes their baking equally seriously and focuses primarily on making bread and buns made with sourdough as well as plant based pastries. Every Friday Leve also offers a new donut, something of which has turned into a success story that almost brings more people on a Friday for pastry than the local night clubs. Just make sure to pre-book it on their website in advance to secure it.

Patisserie David – With a dash of portuguese
What do you get if you combine a Portuguese baker, schooled in France and Luxembourg, and have him move to Malmö? You get David Fernandes and his French-Portuguese bakery Patisserie David set in a beautiful yellow-orange building in the area of St. Gertrud.
Patisserie David is one of the older bakeries and cafés on the list, that easily end up a bit forgotten between all the trendy new places opening up around in the city. But when you want to enjoy iconic pastry such as tartelettes, eclairs, flan, macarons, caneles or pasteis de nata there is no place like the house of Davids.
Also a contrast to many other bakeries on the list, Patisserie David got plenty of space to enjoy either a breakfast, lunch or a fika all day long. And if you take a peek on the left when entering the location, you most likely will happen to see David and his team be full at work making bread, pastry or perhaps one of his famous sculpted sugar swans for a beautiful wedding cake.

Nansi’s Bageri – A true local icon
At this tiny beloved Persian bakery, the previous owner Hamidreza Tahvildar has been making and selling baked goods for well over 30 years, and it continues doing so even after a recent ownership change due to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nansi’s signature bread that makes the locals keep coming back on a regular basis however is specifically the barbari bread, a delightful, crispy huge flatbread topped with sesame seeds. Bring it home and put it into a hot oven to make it extra crispy and wonderful together with a creamy hummus and other delicious meze dishes, just as many other restaurants serve it with that get their bread from Nansi’s. Well, that is if you can restrain yourself from taking a bite directly after buying it, that is.
Nansi’s is open every day of the week from 8 a clock in the morning until the evening. Just be aware that their beloved barbari bread quickly runs out, so if you want to experience this local Malmö favorite then you do best by arriving early to secure your goods.
