Solaris - the name refers to the power of the sun and early maturity - is a new breed from Geisenheim specifically with the aim of disease and fungal resistance. The Merzling grape variety and a hybrid grape obtained from Muscat-Ottonel acted as parents. Solaris only received its approval in Germany in 2004, so today there is just under 60 hectares in production, the largest share in the Baden wine-growing region. Due to its resistance, the grape variety is particularly suitable for relatively cool and humid wine-growing regions, especially since it sprouts late and ripens very early with high sugar production at the same time. That's why you can find them in newly planted vineyards in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Belgium. To date, however, the Solaris wines have hardly been available on the market in large quantities, which is why little can be said at this point about their character, ripeness and development potential.
