Best views: The most beautiful rooftop bars in Salzburg

Locations that not only offer an impressive panorama, but also a variety of culinary experiences.

Salzburg is known for its rich history, picturesque architecture and cultural diversity, but the rooftop eateries in the city of Mozart are proof that it is not only exciting in terms of culture, but also has a lively gastronomy scene. Whether you want to enjoy a gourmet meal with a view of the old town, or simply spend a relaxing evening with a cocktail, there are new perspectives to be found on high.

A perennial favourite is, of course, the ‘Steinterrasse’: the portfolio ranges from breakfast club to business lunch, aperitivo spot to romantic setting for a dinner for two, or as a meeting place before going out. The food concept of the Steinterrasse bears the signature of top chef Andreas Senn. Salzburgers feel just as comfortable there as holidaymakers looking for something special.

Not a rooftop in the classic sense, as it is located high on the mountain, but with just as much flair, is the ‘M32’ – Mönchsberg 32. Just like the Steinterrasse, it is open all day and offers a wide range of culinary delights far above the rooftops of the city, starting with a breakfast menu for the perfect way to begin the day.

A new addition is the ‘hu:goes14’, a rooftop bar on the 14th floor of the ‘arte Hotel Salzburg’, where the name says it all, as 14 different ‘hu:go’ mixed drinks are offered in addition to an extensive bar menu.

The ‘Cool Mama’ has become very well-established in recent years: this is where Salzburgers meet cosmopolitan guests for breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee or dinner. Culinary delights include fish and steak combined with traditional influences.

Only a few steps away from Mirabell Palace is the ‘Hotel Pitter’, built from 1885 to 1888 under Karl and Babette Pitter, which initially made a name for itself as a beer hall, then as Salzburg’s largest concert café and the largest hotel in the city of Mozart. And today, the family-run 4-star superior ‘Imlauer Hotel Pitter’ is still a fixed star in Salzburg's hotel industry: breakfast, dining, and celebrating with a view of the fortress is the motto. A special bonus during the festival season: hot food is served until 11pm.
