Calls to airline helpline lands customer with hefty phone bill

UK

A father-of-two from the UK charged more than £220 after changing flights.

The need to rearrange holiday flights from Luton to Malaga left a Hull man with a £223 bill – the cost of around 100 minutes to the premium rate Wizz Air helpline.

Lewis Richardson was attempting to move his booked flights from August 2021 to August 2022, and having read Wizz Air’s flight change policy believed he could change his booking. After more than an hour-and-a-half on calls, he was eventually told he would have book new flights at an additional cost of £450.

It was only later when Mr Richardson checked his phone bill he found the cost of four 09 numbers, listed for Wizz’s UK call centre, totalling £223.06. When he complained he said he was ignored, but the airline has put this down to an “internal error”.

A spokesperson for Wizz Air said: “Wizz Air has looked into Mr Richardson’s claim and found that his compensation was rejected due to an isolated internal error. The customer service team has contacted Mr Richardson and the case has now been resolved. Wizz Air sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused.”
