Michelin Guide crowns two new three-star restaurants in Spain

The Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2023 has been unveiled and two restaurants have received the top rating for the first time.

Atrio in Cáceres, whose menu features "Iberian pork and the natural bounty of Extremadura", and Cocina Hermanos Torres in Barcelona, helmed by chefs Sergio and Javier Torres, were both awarded the highest rating of three stars.

Their acsension brings the total number of top-rated Michelin restaurants in Spain and Portugal to 13. The awards were unveiled on Tuesday at a ceremony in the historic city of Toledo in central Spain.

Deessa, located in Madrid’s Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Pepe Vieira in the village of Serpe and El Rincón by Juan Carlos, set within the Royal Hideaway Corales Beach in Adeje, Tenerife, were each crowned with two-stars.

The Guide now features 41 two-star restaurants, 34 of which are located in Spain and seven in Portugal.

Great year for one-star eateries

Thirty-four new restaurants, 29 in Spain and five in Portugal, earnt a one-star rating.

"It’s clearly been a great year for the one Michelin star category. Gastronomy aficionados will find new restaurants throughout Spain and Portugal with numerous chefs who have reached professional maturity and young talents who enchanted the Michelin inspectors with their culinary personality and prowess," the guide said in a statement.

It also noted the entry of vegan cooking into the realm of haute cuisine, and the positive response that was generating from foodies.

In total, 235 one-star restaurants were recognised, 203 of which were in Spain.
