The New Zealand wine industry has set itself the goal of reaching net zero by 2050.

The New Zealand winegrowers have published a new roadmap for the New Zealand wine industry until 2050 with the Wine Roadmap to Net Zero 2050. They want to reach net zero in the next 26 years.

"Climate change is the biggest long-term challenge facing our industry. It will affect our choice of grape varieties, wine styles, winemaking techniques and regions and, most importantly, our customers' purchasing decisions. Our response to climate change is critical to New Zealand's reputation as a producer of high quality, sustainable and premium wine," said New Zealand Winegrowers Environment Committee Chair Fabian Yukich.

The roadmap was made possible with the support of the EECA (Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority) and created by thinkstep-anz. It shows the industry's current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint and outlines where the wine industry needs to be in 2030, 2040 and 2050, in line with the industry's ambition. The roadmap also provides wineries and vineyards with practical options for innovation that can help the industry reduce its emissions as quickly as possible.

"The wine industry has a proud history of taking on challenges and turning them into opportunities. Learning from each other and from partners across the supply chain will be critical to reducing emissions and meeting our 2050 target." – Dr. Edwin Massey, General Manager Sustainability at New Zealand Winegrowers.
