UK café charges rude customers more than double the price

UK

Friendliness is a two-way street...a café owner in Preston is now offering a financial incentive to encourage his customers to be polite.

Every day Usman Hussain serves his customers delicious creations in his Chaii Stop café. Chai tea, sweet doughnuts and desserts are all on the menu. But what café owner doesn't like are unfriendly customers...and so he has come up with an unusual policy.

Hussain recently posted a modified price list on his café's Instagram feed, according to which polite customers pay less for a drink than those who are more taciturn with their order. For a Desi Chai the owner charges £5. Adding a "please" reduces the bill to £3. Customers who add a "hello" and a "please" to their order only pay £1.90 for their hot drink.

Punishing unfriendly customers is not the 29-year-old owner's intention, according to UK media reports. Rather he aims to create a good mood and a polite environment, in keeping with his motto "Good Vibes Only". Hussain has had no major problems with rude customers so far, as he told the Lancashire Post: "We've never had any problems with rude customers, but since we've had the sign, people are much more open-minded and laugh with us."

The café owner says he got the idea for the sign from a Facebook post by an American café that introduced the same rule a few years ago. However, no customer has yet paid the full price of £5 at Hussain's café: "If someone forgets their manners, I point to the sign and they immediately ask more politely."
