US government issues warning for travellers to Mexico

State Department urges citizens to avoid a number of areas ahead of spring break season.

The US government has warned its citizens to avoid travelling to six Mexican states with real fears over the potential of kidnappings, and the danger they may become innocent victims of shootings between rival gangs.

The states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas have been highlighted as areas where ongoing violence is prevalent and these have been issued with a “do not travel” warning, with fears that tourists could be targeted for kidnappings.

US officials have also urged tourists to exercise increased caution when travelling in other states including Quintana Roo, home to the popular destination of Cancun. Taxi disputes in the state have turned violent with US tourists among those who have been injured.

There are only two states that are free from the latest restrictions, Campeche and Yucatan, locations that are home to some of the country’s most popular attractions including Chichen Itza.
