World’s Top 10 Busiest Airports Revealed
About 4.5 billion people flew last year, according to statistics from Airports Council International (ACI). Here are top ten busiest airports in 2021 based on passenger volume.
US airports the busiest
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (75.7 million passengers) has regained its title as the world’s busiest airport after falling to second position in 2020. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (62.5 million passengers) follows in the second place, ahead of Denver International Airport (58.8 million passengers) on third place.
Most notably, Orlando International Airport (40,4 million passengers) saw a massive influx of passengers last year, jumping from 27th position in 2020 to seventh. Guangzhou Bai Yun International Airport (40.3 million passengers) in China fell from the first to eighth position, showing how badly affected the country has been by the Covid pandemic.
US and China switch places
US airports made up eight of the ten busiest airports last year, a near reversal from 2020 when airports in China took seven of the top ten slots. At present, most international visitors are not yet allowed entry to the country.
“Although we are cautious that recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by reopening plans by countries could lead to an uptick in travel in the second half of 2022,” ACI director general Luis Felipe de Oliveira said.
According to ACI, passenger traffic of the top ten busiest airports represents almost 10% of global traffic (463 million passengers), a significant gain of 52% from 2020.
