Burgenland

Under the influence of the Pannonian climate grow a total of 13,100 hectares of vineyards in the easternmost province; for elegant white wines, the full-bodied red wines of Austria and sweet wines of world renown. There are differences in the natural conditions that should not be underestimated. In the very south of Burgenland, for example, the Eisenberg with its special soil and a somewhat cooler climate offers optimal conditions for elegant, delicate and characterful Blaufränkische, which is supported by the finest minerality. Blaufränkisch grapes also grow on the heavier clay soils of central Burgenland, as well as north of the Rosalia Mountains, producing wines with particular depth of fruit and length. On the Leithaberg, west of Lake Neusiedl, a pronounced mineral note can be added. In recent years, wines from international grape varieties and cuvées have also achieved the highest recognition. The Leithagebirge with its limestone and slate soils is also a unique terroir for complex white wines, especially Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, but also Grüner Veltliner. Fine Prädikat wines such as the legendary "Ruster Ausbruch" complete the trinity of Burgenland's wine expertise. East of Lake Neusiedl, Blaue Zweigelt dominates with powerful, juicy red wines, although Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent also deliver excellent results. The Seewinkel in the southern part with its special microclimate is one of the few great sweet wine strongholds in the world. Here the high humidity favours the formation of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) due to the numerous "Zicklacken" in autumn. Thus, great and dry berryish selections can be regularly obtained here. The wide diversity of soils allows an equally diverse range of grape varieties to flourish, including Chardonnay, Scheurebe and Muskat Ottonel. Traminer especially reaches Welschriesling's highest quality level, whether with or without the use of wood. The region is evolving with Ruster Ausbruch DAC and the incorporation of the city, with the dry wines at Leithaberg DAC and with Neusiedlersee DAC. Prädikatsweine are now vinified throughout Burgenland DAC. .

Retsina: a classic reborn
Retsina enjoys a bad reputation but definitely deserves a second chance.
