Germany's smallest growing region has 452 hectares of vines - only about a quarter of the yield area that, for example, the Pfalz town of Landau alone can boast. The Bergstrasse is dominated by Riesling, as is its sibling region, the Rheingau, both of which belong to the state of Hesse. The wines from Heppenheim and Bensheim are somewhat leaner and more robust than those from the Rheingau - but they can age almost as well. The Hessische Bergstrasse merges smoothly into the Badische Bergstrasse - the border between the two areas is purely administrative.
