South Coast

The South Coast AVA covers the west coast administrative areas of Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Diego County. The vineyards are located between the cities of Los Angeles to the north and San Diego on the Mexican border to the south. The large area is divided into a number of smaller sub-regions to show the climatic and geological differences. The climate is more temperate due to the coastal proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The wines have a good acidity and fine aromas, these are created by the substantial temperature differences between day and night. The special microclimate of the "cold climate" areas in the interior is particularly well suited for growing the Burgundy varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Large wineries are usually not found in these regions; these are regions for dedicated individualists and Burgundy specialists.
