From the quiet Villach hill to the lively - and sometimes rather noisy, thanks to the misfiring of sports cars - Corso in Velden. The regular guests of the "freindal Wirtschaft" first have to get used to this change of location. Marcus Kubinec and Christoph Terschan ran their restaurant in the rustic ambience of an old house on the Johanneshöhe near Villach for nine years. When they were offered the "Caramé" in Velden, which had been vacant for two years, they didn't have much to think about. The address has long had a reputation as a place for sophisticated cuisine, and it was here that top chef Hubert Wallner started his career in 2005. After renovating and refreshing the ambience, the two young men are now trying their luck there - and not just opposite the casino, as the entire building and restaurant also belong to Casinos Austria. The menu and wine list are only available electronically, Terschan's cuisine oscillates between Asian, Mediterranean and grilled dishes made from large cuts of beef, which can be inspected at the table on a wooden board. Beef tataki is served on a boat-shaped plate - with Asian salad
with Asian salad, chili, coriander, mint, sesame and lime - an excellently seasoned summer dish. It continues with dense aromas, such as bucatini with a creamy, tomato-based crustacean sauce, juicy pieces of lobster and pimpinelle. Or tuna Asian curry with rice noodles, pak choi, pimientos de
Padròn - with thin slices of tuna tataki on top. The majority of the wine list is unusually reasonably priced, champagne from 79 euros is not found everywhere here. And there are also a few outliers for casino winners - in Pol Roger "Winston Churchill", "Solaia" or
"Batonnage" is money well spent.
