Hundreds of restaurants advertise "Viennese cuisine". The restaurant "Joseph II" in the Kontrollorstöckl of Schönbrunn Palace, once the seat of the Court Procurement Office, shows what it means when it is cooked to perfection. In 2021, it became a wine tavern with wine shelves once well stocked by Viennese winegrowers, and later a tourist restaurant. And now Andreas "Andi" Wojta, known as the good-humored show chef of the ORF long-running series "Andi & Alex", cooks there. Until the beginning of 2025, he ran the "Minoritenstüberl", the public canteen of the Ministry of Education founded by his mother and always an insider tip among gourmets, with seriousness and dedication. He then did a few rounds on "Dancing Stars" before moving to a neater public building. Wojta inherited his flair from his mother and absorbed the art of cooking from the great Reinhard Gerer († 2023) and Eckart Witzigmann. You can also eat salmon or mozzarella here. It's much better to devote yourself to the local specialty. Grammelknöderl - the diminutive is often used here - with a fine dough, a really nice crunch inside and creamy cabbage underneath. Wonderful. With the "Rieslingsbeuscherl", someone dared to calculate a price (24 euros) that was appropriate for the effort involved - perfectly seasoned, of course. Only the napkin dumplings must have dried somewhere. Still on the to-do list: Beef roulade and apricot dumplings. It should come as no surprise that the restaurant is surrounded by tourists, but rather that despite the large wine cabinets, there are only five moderately exciting wines to accompany this cuisine, only two of which are from Vienna.
