Elio Altare is recognized as one of the Barolo pioneers, he belongs to the this group of winemakers -so called ‘Barolo Boys’, that in early 80ies started approaching the vineyard managing and the cellar work with innovative and different techniques compared to the previous generations.Stubbornly Elio decided to change direction and give a different interpretation to the family's wine, favoring elegance, finesse, and balance. The wines turned out to be different, the scandal was huge and Elio and his ‘Barolo boys’ colleagues were considered almost like heretics.Today after 40 years we like to call ourselves “traditionally modern”, we still follow the same path of continuous research and experimentation, wines are simple and natural, never filtered nor clarified and vineyards farmed organically since the 80iesSince 2003 Silvia, began working beside Elio, while Elena, the youngest daughter, moved to Germany, where she runs a wine importing company. The size of the production hasn’t changed through the years, we are still a family run winery, we manage 10 hectares of vineyards, 3 of which are rented, mostly located in La Morra, but also in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d’ Alba and Serralunga d’ Alba. The average production sits between 60 and 80.000 bottles, split between 12 labels, allows us to focus on single grand cru Barolo vineyards like: Arborina, Cannubi or Cerretta, but we still like to play around with the Langhe wines, Larigi, La Villa and Giàrborina and with the newest born hand de-stemmed Barolo Unoperuno, and of coursed the well-established charity wine project L’ Insieme which started in 1997.
We strive to get to the best quality every vintage and always our first goal is our health and the health of the people that work with us, strictly respecting the land and the environment because it’s from the vineyards that we get our only profit.
